I am a lecturer in the Center for Latin American Studies at San Diego State University and the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California and have Ph.D. in Latin American and World History from the University of Arizona. I also own and manage a small digital media company specializing in helping educational, self-help, and non-profit companies and institutions promote their services.

My dissertation titled “Exercising the Cosmic Race: Mexican Sporting Culture and Mestizo Citizens” explores the racial and gendered politics of Mexican citizenship and the authoritative power of global science through sports programs from 1890 to 1968. The study, the first complete survey of national sports in this period, showed that, full of optimism and guided by global eugenic sciences, military, medical, and cultural leaders aimed to transform their purportedly backwards and decadent dark-skinned indigenous population into whitened, virile, and productive worker-citizens that they believed the modern world demanded through modern sport and physical education from Europe and North America.
